The National Conservatory of Arts and Crafts (CNAM) is a large institution of higher education and fundamental and applied research. On October 10, 1794 (19 Vendémiaire Year III of the Republic), the Convention, on the proposal of Abbé Grégoire, deputy, created the Conservatory of Arts and Crafts (the national term would come much later), with the aim of widely disseminating technological innovation, and making knowledge accessible to as many people as possible. In the law of October 10, 1794 creating the Conservatory of Arts and Crafts, one of the missions entrusted to the new body was to conserve machines, models, tools, drawings, descriptions and books useful for the arts and crafts.
